Picture Tutorial: How to Use Iron On Transfers

We are going to Disneyland in two days! It will be the first trip for all three of my kids, so I decided it would be fun to make shirts for all of us. It is surprisingly easy to make shirts with iron on transfers and they are perfect for a birthday party, family trip or even a bachelorette party!

I just started selling printable iron on transfers in the shop. If you have never used iron on transfers, the process can seem a little daunting, but I promise it is easy (even for me and I am not a crafty person by nature, nor do I sew!). I thought I would provide a picture tutorial here for all of you who are thinking about doing iron on transfers for the first time.

If you are interested in a custom printable iron on transfer, send me an email at pamelareneeprintables@gmail.com. I would love to work with you!

These instructions are for inkjet iron on transfer paper like the Avery T-shirt Transfers for Inkjet Printers (you can also buy in a larger pack, which is most cost effective if you are going to be making several shirts). Please refer to the actual instructions for the transfers that you purchase.

 Iron On Transfer Instructions:

1. Print your image on iron on transfer paper. Make sure that you use a mirror image!

2. Turn your iron on to the highest cotton setting. Let it preheat for at least 5 minutes. Do NOT use steam.

3. On a hard flat surface (not an ironing board) waist lever or lower iron a pillowcase until it is wrinkle free.

4. Place your t-shirt on top and iron for approximately 2 minutes. You want to get all of the moisture out of the shirt of the transfer won't adhere properly.

5. Cut around your image, rounding the corners as you cut. This will help the edges to adhere. Get as close to the image as possible while cutting.
Hint: You will want to make the cut fairly even because you can see a bit of the clear shimmer from the transfer paper around the image after you adhere.

6. Place image face down onto the shirt. Align as straight as possible.

7. Starting from the left and working your way to the right, apply firm pressure and iron. Repeat 20 times.
Hint: The first time I go across, I hold the image with my finger on the corner and start a little from the edge so it doesn't slip (be careful not to burn yourself!).

8. Starting at the top and working your way to the bottom iron applying firm pressure. Repeat 20 times.

9. Let your shirt and transfer cool for approximately 2 minutes.

10. Once shirt has cooler, begin slowly peeling back transfer paper. The image should be firmly on the shirt and should not remain on the transfer paper. If it is not adhering properly, you may not have applied enough pressure and/or heat.

11. Wear your new shirt!

The process in its entirety takes about 10 minutes.
